MUST

In the sixth unit of your textbook you are going to learn (imparerete) how to use the modal verb MUST.
But, first of all (prima di tutto), what is a modal verb?

A modal verb is also known (conosciuto) as a helping verb. It gives additional information about the main verb (verbo principale) that follows it. CAN is also a modal verb!

Its structure is very easy!

We use MUST to show two things: necessity or possibility.

NECESSITY

We can use ‘must’ in a sentence (frase) to talk about something we need to do (abbiamo bisogno di fare). For example, ‘I must get my hair cut before my meeting tomorrow’. In this sentence, we can see it is important for me to get my hair cut before the meeting. Maybe I want to make a good impression on my boss!

Usually when we use the word ‘must’ it is because the speaker has decided something is necessary to do.

  • You must give up (smettere) smoking, it's bad for you.
  • You must drive carefully.
  • You must study the last two chapters before the test.

POSSIBILITY

When we are talking about possible causes of a situation or action, we can use the word ‘must’ to show we are fairly (abbastanza) sure of the reason behind something. For example:

The cookies are missing (sono spariti). Sally must have taken them (li deve aver presi).

In this example, the speaker is sure that Sally is the person who took the cookies. Maybe Sally loves cookies or has a history of taking food from the kitchen. Whatever (qualsiasi) the reason, the speaker has decided that it was Sally who took the cookies.

  • Look at all of that snow. It must be really cold outside.
  • It's five in the morning and you still haven't gone to bed? You must be tired!
  • Jack must be home. I heard a noise coming from his room.

MUSTN'T

The negative is MUST NOT = MUSTN'T and refers to prohibition

  • You mustn't use your smartphone while (mentre) you are driving.
  • You must not open the gift until (fino a) it is your birthday.
  • We must not tell anyone.

You can take a look at the following video for more details (dettagli)

And now... try to do some exercises! Copy or print (stampare) and paste (incollare) them on your exercise books. Write in the comments if you have any doubts... and keep an eye on the blog because in the next days I'm going to publish something else!

It's Christmas time!

Do you celebrate Christmas?   I really love this period of the year! My favourite things are:
  • Being with my family
  • The delicious food made by my mum
  • Christmas songs
  • Decorating the Christmas tree

What's your favourite thing about it? Do you like to decorate your house? How do you decorate your room and your home?
Have you ever thought (avete mai pensato) about "alternative" decorations? Instead of (invece di) buying Christmas decorations, why not DIY - Do It Youself?
In the following video you could (potrete) find three ideas for some cool and easy-to-make decorations... using food!

Another thing I really love in this period are Christmas ads (pubblicità): they're really creative!
Look at this one... can you guess (indovinare) what this ad is for?

You see... it's never too late to learn English when there's a strong motivation behind!  😉

How not to be rude ordering food ;-)

Tonight I'm going to publish another funny video about how to order food.. in this case in a pub! You're lucky since (dato che) this time it's half in Italian and half in English!

So, remember..."I WANT" is absolutely RUDE! Federico in particular has to (deve) keep that in mind next time he takes Aurora out! Just jocking 😉
Could you please write down in the comments if you actually can see it? Thanks

Moreover, to not forget what we said about containers and quantities, look at the video and with the help of a dictionary do the exercise below (write it down on your exercise book or, if you can, print it)

Don't worry! I know it's late, so this is NOT for tomorrow... you can do it during the break 😇😇😇

Talking about movies....

Can you guess what's my favourite type of movie (American English word for Film)? :-)
Yes... I really like animated ones, even though (anche se) I'm 40!!!

They're amazing, funny, colorful and make you live (ti fanno) in a fantasy world.... moreover (inoltre) they have special meanings too! In Shrek, for example, we can learn that what matters (ciò che importa) is what's inside!

But I've got a big problem! No one (nessuno) of my friends wants to go with me to the cinema to watch them 'cause they think animation is just for kids (children)! So I usually wait for the DVD release to watch them comfortably (comodamente) on my couch (American word for sofa)!

Do you like watching movies? Can you write something about your favourite type/genre of movie? Why do you like it? What about the last film you watched? What was it about? Do you prefer watching films/movies at your home or at the cinema? DO NOT just answer the questions, but write a paragraph, please. Try to use (provate ad usare) some of the words or sentences (frasi) you will find in the video below...

I know it's a little bit (un po') long, but I think it's really interesting and helpful when it comes to write about movies and you can learn new sentences as well (anche)! Have fun with it!

Wednesday Homework

Hi guys! That's homework time! =P
Here you are your homework for next Wednesday:  page 58 exercises 1-2.
The two of them have to be done on your
exercise book (tutti e due sul quaderno).
Moreover (inoltre), using the new words you found in the exercises, you should (dovreste) create a food mind map (mappa concettuale)!
Here you are some examples from which you can draw inspiration (trarre ispirazione):

DO NOT just copy them!
You can draw the maps yourselves or you can use free software  like:

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG!

to MPE, My Perfect English! A special thank to Giorgia who had the idea for the title!

A blog is a virtual place where people can share (condividere) ideas, so I hope you will improve (migliorare) your English by sharing your own ideas with your classmates.
What are we going to do in this blog? Any ideas?
Ok... ok.... I'll help you! : )

We are going to comment (in English obviously) on songs, pictures, jokes, videos and whatever (qualsiasi cosa) comes to your minds! And from time to time (di tanto in tanto), I will also post some maps or schemas that could help you in your study.... after all I'm your English teacher!

Since (dato che) we had a lesson about Halloween last week, the first thing I would like you to comment on is a video....

Did you like it? What do you think about it? What's the best or the funniest (la più divertente) part according to you (secondo voi)?  When was the last time you got dressed up (mascherarsi) and what did you wear?

I will wait for your comments...
